(Exodus 20:12) "Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

One of my friends here is a carer for her mother, and things have been proving very difficult for her lately. This got me thinking about my relationship with my own mother, who went to be with the Lord a few years ago.

My mother lived about a 5/6 hour drive away from us, so it wasn't easy to drop in and chat - nonetheless, my wife kept on at me to phone her.

At first, it wasn't easy. I didn't have the time (or the heart) for a long chat, and our discussions were usually brief and extremely uninspiring. "How are you?" I'm fine, thanks. "How are the kids?" They're fine, thanks. "Will you be coming up to see me?" We hope to, but I can't see it happening soon ..."

Then, one day, I suddenly started 'communicating' with my mother. After a while, she started telling me all about her life. Over the next few months and years, I began to really look forward to and enjoy our conversations, especially when I began to comprehend and understand some of her reasonings and choices. Bottom line: I got to 'love' my Mamma—and not just because she was my mother!

I'm not pretending that everything was fabulous, though. Towards the end of her life, she struggled with vascular dementia, and as you can imagine, the journey got horribly bumpy... But GOD was Faithful, and she would later recall that He would often bring her Peace and even meet her in her dreams.

Please pray with me, “Holy Father, You know that I'm struggling with **** and how to cope with their problems. Please help me not to be angry or irritable with them. I don't want to return evil with evil, so help me to give Your love and Your blessing, for this is what You have called me to do.“ Amen 🙏
