At noon the sky became extremely dark. The darkness lasted three hours. At three o’clock, Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
The words that Jesus cried out loudly are taken from the opening lines of Psalm 22. I actually felt this Psalm was quite upsetting right up until verse 22, when the whole feel of the Psalm changes from doom and gloom to absolute Victory!
Yes - our ugly sins drove nails into his body, and yes - our putrid sins thrust every conceivable punishment that should have been ours to bear on him ...!
But look at what He achieved for us. He granted us access to God and paid in full pardon for 'all' our sins.
For God was in Christ, restoring the world to himself, no longer counting men’s sins against them but blotting them out. This is the wonderful message he has given us to tell others. We are Christ’s ambassadors. God is using us to speak to you: we beg you, as though Christ himself were here pleading with you, receive the love he offers you—be reconciled to God. For God took the sinless Christ and poured into him our sins. Then, in exchange, he poured God’s goodness into us! (2 Cor 5:19)
“Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches. Christ-conquerors are safe from Devil-death.” (Rev 2:11)
