Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. (Psa 37:4)
I recently saw how a scientist posted a fascinating experiment whereby birds have been taught to gather and deposit bottle tops in a container, and each time they do this successfully, a machine drops a peanut down a tube for them to eat.
It’s called utilising a means to an end, and we can all be exceptionally good at that.
Even though none of us likes being used or ignored, yet we all know how to flatter, cajole, turn on the tears, throw tantrums, lie and even bully in order to get our own selfish way!
Likewise, our souls know only too well that there are two definite parts to the above Scripture: (a) Delight yourself in the Lord (b) He will give you the desires of your heart. We can either act like immature kids and pay lip service to the first part just to achieve the second. Or we can grow up and recognise that our Heavenly Father isn’t at all like Father Christmas.
In order to communicate and interact with us in love, He created us ‘in His image’, which means we were given a personality and feelings – just like Him. And He also gave us the ability to love – just like Him.
Lord, I know that you 'know' everything ... please help me not to skip the first part of the Scripture so that I can just get what I want. Help me, Father, to bring you what you really want – me!
