Most of us would rather be elsewhere than a band practice on a cold Friday evening at 7:30... It was the first time any of us had ever seen her. She was only about 10 or 11 and came in behind her mother, and although you could tell she was (extremely) nervous, her mother didn’t try and pamper her. She calmly whispered something in her ear, gave her a tweak of affection and a nudge of encouragement, then calmly sat down on a chair a few feet away, pulled out a magazine and began to read.
Everyone was busy tuning their instruments and setting up, and the poor thing seemed to freeze in her spot as she stared out awkwardly at her mother, her flute held loosely at her side.
We guitarists were closest to her, so we started joking with her, and before long, her demeanour visibly changed, and her grateful beaming smile radiated across the whole area.
I’m not going to tell you that she played better than anyone I’d ever heard before, but the acceptance she felt beautifully flowed out from her as she worshipped GOD with us - and we could all see it.
Lord, please help me to take my eyes off ‘me and my needs’ and help me to see what’s breaking your heart in the lives around me.
