Recently I read of an old lady who had been burgled. There really wasn't anything of any worth in her flat, so the burglars took some old worn out and battered jewellery together with private family items which she said were precious memories from now-dead family members and could never be replaced - how sad.
This chain of thought reminded me of a film about an old man sitting on his own in a locked vault staring at old valuable art treasures - that immensely poignant scene left me feeling quite sad.
Then, like a breath of fresh air, I remembered a visit to my mother who in searching for something or other, slowly pulled out a piece of material on which I had clumsily written the words “I love you” when I was about 5 years old. She looked me in the eyes as she held this scrap of material to her heart and with tears in her eyes told me how much this meant to her.
Lord Jesus, open my heart today and show me what I’m valuing as ‘my treasure.’
