(1 Sam 23:1) "It was reported to David that the Philistines were raiding Keilah and looting the grain. David went in prayer to GOD: “Should I go after these Philistines and teach them a lesson?” GOD said, “Go. Attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” But David’s men said, “We live in fear of our lives right here in Judah. How can you think of going to Keilah in the thick of the Philistines?” So David went back to GOD in prayer. GOD said, “Get going. Head for Keilah. I’m placing the Philistines in your hands.” David and his men went to Keilah and fought the Philistines. He scattered their cattle, beat them decisively, and saved the people of Keilah.
I have brought many problems to GOD in my life, and just like David’s men, when you apply man's logic (and add the dominating requirement of self-preservation), any choice other than GOD’s direction will manifest itself as the preferred (and most prudent) choice.
OK, so the self-preservative dictates of David's men have totally weighed down the scales onto the opposing side. Still, the balance mightily changed when we added the prayers of the people of Keilah, who were fearful for their lives (as well as the Promise of GOD) on the opposite side! And all because GOD heard their prayers for salvation…!
Self-preservation (worrying about myself or what others near and dear to me might think or do) never stands up before our GOD. He doesn’t class it as wisdom but names it for what it is – Fear.
Lord, I want to walk and live in Your Light. Help me to accept the seeming foolishness of obeying you and trusting in Your Grace.
GOD, who created all our hearts, says, “Come to Me, my dear Child, and I will show you how to break free and live! Do your part and trust in Me enough to honour Me.”
