Some time ago, a Preacher at our church was hammering on about people being trapped in their own sins, and unless they ‘came clean,’ they wouldn’t just remain in bondage but even die in their sins …!

I happened to be helping at the back of the church at the time and leaning on the back of a small bench when a guy surreptitiously snuck up and asked me to pray with him. I said, “Sure, anything specific?” Through the side of his mouth, he whispered, “You know … it's the ‘sex’ thing the Pastor’s going on about - I'm getting hooked on pornography!”

Somehow though, he didn’t seem serious, but rather he seemed undecided about the whole thing. Well, I wasn’t about to judge him, so I closed my eyes and was just about to place my arm on his shoulder and pray when I distinctly heard the Holy Spirit tell me, “No!”

I was dumbstruck for a while and then even more amazed when I heard myself ask him, “So, if we use this 2-foot-long bench as a ruler to measure your trek into porn, just about where are you on it?” I made out a few inches with my hands and said, “Here?” “No”, he said, moving my hands to well over halfway, “maybe even over here?”

“So…” I heard myself say, “In order to chase this desire, you’ve allowed yourself to indulge quite a lot more than you ever thought you would?” I then pointed to the endpoint. “And if going just over halfway has brought about this amount of pain in you, just imagine what you’ll be like if you go any further!?”

“My GOD!” He cried out as dawning realisation came upon him. “GET IT OUT OF ME..!”

Content with how the Holy Spirit had worked, I said, “Now you’re in agreement with GOD – we can pray,”
