Which one of us can truly say, “I am free from sin in my life, for my heart is clean and pure”? Mark it down: God hates it when you demonstrate a double standard— one for “them” and one for “you.” (Prov 20:9)
Let’s face it we have ALL performed with double standards at one time or another - but GOD, in Jesus, shows us how to behave truly.
For example, when the religious rulers dragged the woman caught in adultery before Jesus in order to stone her to death, they weren’t doing it out of any perfect ideal – they just wanted to trap him into saying or doing something that would break the law. Instead, Jesus tells them: “Let’s have the man who has never had a sinful desire throw the first stone at her.” (John 8:7).
And then, when all the religious men had left with a convicted conscience, he turned to the woman and said: “Dear woman, where are your accusers? Is there no one here to condemn you?” Looking around, she replied, “I see no one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Then I certainly don’t condemn you either. Go, and from now on, be free from a life of sin.” (John 8:10)
Only GOD, working in and through Jesus, can free us from a life of sin. And when we come to him and pour out our woes before him, the stones of judgement will all fall away, and we too will hear him say: “Go, and from now on, be free from a life of sin.”
