“Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” (Job 2:10)
I must have only been about 7 or 8 years old. I’d been out with my friends playing football, and when I finally came home, my mother noticed me holding my right hand rather protectively. When she asked me what was wrong, I instinctively pulled away from her, telling her not to touch it as it hurt.
After a lot of coaxing, she finally got me to show her my hand. I’d gotten a huge splinter in my finger; it must have been in for days and had started to go black and septic.
She immediately went and got some hot water and a bowl together with a pair of tweezers and a needle. My imagination ran rife, and I must have screamed the house down in fear!
I did not succumb willingly, but she never quit and finally, out came the offending splinter. I managed to pull away in grateful joy … but no – there was MORE!!! “It’s not finished yet, son,” she said. “I now need to get the poison out!” I had to go back through the valley of the shadow of death! Noooooo!!!
My imagination went into overdrive, and for a seeming eternity, I laid there (sobbing like a baby) while she patiently and ever so gently squeezed out all the horrible stuff that had gotten into my finger through my ignorance/stupidity.
The moral … sometimes we have to let GOD’s gentle fingers remove the ‘stuff’ we’ve accumulated in our lives – ‘stuff’ that will ultimately destroy us!
