(Jesus speaking) "... what comes out of the mouth gets its start in the heart. It’s from the heart that we vomit up evil arguments, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, lies, and cussing." (Matt 15:18)
Let's say you take an orange and you squeeze it as hard as you can. What do you expect to get from that action? Orange juice for sure. No matter how many times you squeeze it apple juice won't come out. And the reason that orange juice comes out is because "that’s what’s inside!"
Now, you extend the metaphor, and someone squeezes you—that is, someone says something about you that you don’t like or behaves in a way toward you that you find offensive. And out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, tension, fear, anxiety, stress … And our immediate response is to say, “Well, that comes out of me because of the way they said it, or they deliberately said that to hurt me, or …"
But the truth is (the reality is) that what comes out is what’s actually inside! And if you don’t like what’s inside - then you can change it …!
A great way to pray is: Help me, Lord, for You have said that life and death are in the power of the tongue. Forgive me for being critical, judgmental, sarcastic, rude or unkind with my words. Help me to speak life and encouragement to those around me. Help me to walk in love, always offering words of kindness, love, and grace so that I do not grieve the Holy Spirit. Help me to be wise and use my tongue to speak healing words because a gentle tongue is like a tree of life, and I don’t want to crush other people’s spirits.
Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches. Christ-conquerors are safe from Devil-death.” (Rev 2:11)
