I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. (Psalm 32:8)
I gave my life to the Lord at a time when speaking in tongues seemed to be the pinnacle of achievement, and there wasn’t really much more teaching on the Holy Spirit.
As such, I didn’t learn to lean on Him through books or tapes or TV ministries as much as by hard-fought experience.
I learned the hard way (some would say the best way) by submitting to His Spirit, His Guiding Presence ‘in me’ that :
(a) all the frenetic activity I generated wasn't really required - and instead, I should stay calm and seek His comforting presence
(b) that the end wasn’t the goal - and instead, I should stay calm, seek His will and seek His comforting presence
(c) that it was better for me if I should allow Him to prise me away from my selfish desires - by seeking His comforting presence
(d) that it was better for me if I should allow Him to teach me how to relax - by seeking His comforting presence
(e) that it was better for me if I should allow Him to teach me how to be content and appreciate what I had - by seeking His comforting presence
(f) that it was better for me if I should allow Him to stop me spouting my self-defeating and destructive moaning - and instead, seek His comforting presence and relish the ‘journey'!
The Scripture of Proverbs 3:5 became my constant companion and foremost in my mind - "Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart rely on him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make."
Child of the Living GOD, I know that many of you reading this will be looking for comfort, encouragement or strengthening in your time of testing, and as one traveller to another, I hope to simply point you to the One who 'can' and 'will' answer all your prayerful concerns - through the open-heart seeking of His comforting presence!
