God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He’s set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much, the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating. (Col 1:13)

… doomed to keep repeating! But … how? You might ask.

Most of my generation were actively encouraged to take up smoking. In fact, following the insistence of my peers, I started smoking in the playground at only 11 years of age!

Did I hate it - YES! But could I stop once I’d started? No…! I’d tried (many times), but the hooks were sharp, and my will was pathetic…

Then, one day when my firstborn was almost five years of age, I went to awaken her as I was leaving on a business trip.

Stirring and wiping sleep from her eyes, she suddenly pulled a face at the ‘rotten egg’ smell of smoke on my breath and, wrinkling her nose, said: “Daddy, what is that horrible smell?”

The addiction was still as strong, but it was at that point that I ‘chose’ to look to Jesus for help and quit - and I’ve never looked back!

The thing is, history will prove that life is all about choices! Our Father GOD has given us free will, and maturity will tell us succinctly that it’s better to choose wisely.

As such, I can either ‘choose’ today to react to a stimulation like anger, revenge, addiction, etc, or I can ‘choose’ to feel the squeeze of Jesus’s hand in mine and ‘choose’ to act as He tells me!

“Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.”
