"... watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God." (Heb 3:12)
My business was dying a slow and painful death after my cancer scare in 2010. I was desperate for work, money was horribly tight, and the constant stress left me extremely irritable, moody, downright sulky and tremendously grumpy(to say the least).
In the middle of all that la la, my wife told me that she had been booked on a training course with her work for a couple of days in a posh hotel. Apparently, it was 'all free', so she suggested that I accompany her for nothing more than a change of scenery.
I don’t really know why I agreed to go; I was a lousy companion all the long journey there... The next morning, my wife headed off to one of her meetings, and I was just about to head out to town for a coffee when I really felt compelled (convicted) to stay in the room and open my Bible.
To be honest, I wasn’t at all happy with that. In truth, I was feeling fearful (ashamed), what did He want to say to me? I hadn't been in His Presence for ages, and to be honest, it was becoming easier to blame him for all my problems!
I didn't get anything specific, so with a heavy heart, I very casually flipped the Bible open, and it opened to Job, chapter 36. Verse 7 seemed to light up, and I began reading …
Job 36:7 He withdraws not His eyes from the righteous (the upright in right standing with God); but He sets them forever with kings upon the throne, and they are exalted. And if they are bound in fetters [of adversity] and held by cords of affliction, Then He shows to them [the true character of] their deeds and their transgressions, that they have acted arrogantly [with presumption and self-sufficiency]. He also opens their ears to instruction and discipline, and commands that they return from iniquity. If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasantness and joy.
I was gutted …!!! Then he led me to read further down to verse 16 … Job 36:16-21 "Oh, Job, don't you see how God's wooing you from the jaws of danger? How he's drawing you into wide-open places, inviting you to feast at a table laden with blessings? And here you are laden with the guilt of the wicked, obsessed with putting the blame on God! Take heed, turn not to iniquity, for this [the iniquity of complaining against God] you have chosen rather than [submission in] affliction.
By now, I was sobbing profusely … His Voice then spoke to me very clearly through my brokenness:
Remember who you are - you are My son!
