(Jesus speaking) "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matt 5:5)
An online search tells me that the origin of “meek” in English comes from the Old Norse mjukr, meaning “gentle,” though perhaps a fuller understanding comes from the Greek origin, praus, which is translated as “strength under control.” In ancient Greece, war horses were trained to be meek — strong and powerful yet under control and willing to submit.
I thought a meek person was quite the opposite - someone without any backbone. But when you look at the original Greek, it means:
Gentle, mild, forbearing and humble.
A powerful personality properly controlled with humility.
Not passive, but with strength under control.
Someone who is able to restrain their anger and suffer wrongness without bitterness or revenge!
A person who is able to submit to the proper authority - a willingness to disregard 'their' rights and privileges and submit to GOD.
By this definition, Lord - I WANT TO BE MEEK!
