For at one time you were not God’s people, but now you are. At one time you knew nothing of God’s mercy, because you hadn’t received it yet, but now you are drenched with it! (1 Pet 2:5)
This reminds me of a situation a while ago when a friend of mine called to tell me that his colleague's daughter at work was sick and dying, and he asked me to go with him and pray for her.
I wasn’t prepared for what I saw when I got to the house. She was in her mid 20’s and quite deformed. Extreme distress and pain were etched on her features, and she was sweating profusely even though it was quite cold. Her hair was lank and stuck to her head with sweat, and as she couldn’t move very well, she had been carefully laid on the sofa and covered with a blanket.
There was a lot of fuss over whether we’d like tea or coffee, and everyone seemed to disappear to the kitchen to talk, leaving just me and the girl in the living room together. In a strangled voice, she finally broke an awkward silence and said, “The Bishop came to pray for me last week.” I didn’t know how to respond, so I simply smiled pathetically and nodded. She went on, “In fact, we’ve had them all here, Priests and Pastors, Nuns and Vicars – a fat lot of good they’ve all been …” she trailed off, her sneering vent tinged with sorrow rather than sarcasm.
I still didn’t know what to say and, faced with the enormity of the situation, was praying frantically in my head. Finally, I heard the Lord say, “Yes, she has been told all about me – but she doesn’t ‘know’ me. We’ve never been introduced!”
Hope sprung up within me, and I spent the next few minutes giving her my testimony of how I’d met Jesus and how he’d saved and set me free. Her eyes stared right into my Soul as she asked if she could meet him too. We prayed together, and at the end of the prayer, I opened my eyes, and she honestly looked radiant! She'd even managed to sit up. In fact, to this day, I’d swear that her hair was glowing and flowing as if a breeze was coming from somewhere in the room.
At that moment, her mother came into the room with a tray of drinks, took one look and dropped the lot! She ran to her daughter and, kneeling down beside her, asked, “What’s happened to you?” The daughter tenderly stroked her mother's face and affectionately explained that she’d been introduced to Jesus and had invited him into her life.
We left at about 9pm, rejoicing in GOD’s goodness. My friend called me the next morning at 7am. He'd just received a call from the girl's mother telling her that her daughter had passed on at 2am.
She had died peacefully, wanting to go and be with her new friend Jesus.
