Then, out of nowhere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, “Why are you looking for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, but raised up. Remember how he told you when you were still back in Galilee that he had to be handed over to sinners, be killed on a cross, and in three days rise up?” Then they remembered Jesus’ words. (Luke 24:6)
Jesus cites Psalm 22 shortly before his death on the cross in order to make himself the Psalm petitioner. According to Jewish tradition, that is, to own the entire contents of the Psalm.
The first section begins ... God, God . . . my God! Why did you dump me ...? Doubled up with pain, I call to God all the day long. No answer. Nothing. ... And to think you were midwife at my birth, setting me at my mother’s breasts! When I left the womb you cradled me; since the moment of birth you’ve been my God. ...
The first half is an unravelling of terrible pain as the sins of the world [our sins] are dumped onto our Lord - and finally culminates with ... Now packs of wild dogs come at me; thugs gang up on me. They pin me down hand and foot ...
I like to think that just as in Revelation 8, there was silence in Heaven at the point of our Lord's crucifixion -
Then the Glorious section begins ... Here’s the story I’ll tell my friends when they come to worship, and punctuate it with Hallelujahs: Shout Hallelujah, you God-worshipers; give glory, you sons of Jacob; adore him, you daughters of Israel. He has never let you down, never looked the other way when you were being kicked around. He has never wandered off to do his own thing; he has been right there, listening.
It completes with ... From the four corners of the earth, people are coming to their senses, are running back to God. Long-lost families are falling on their faces before him. God has taken charge; from now on, he has the last word. All the power-mongers are before him —worshipping! All the poor and powerless, too —worshipping! Along with those who never got it together —worshipping! Our children and their children will get in on this. As the word is passed along from parent to child. Babies not yet conceived will hear the good news—that God does what he says.
Two thousand years of tradition states that we should greet each other this Easter Sunday with: "Christ is Risen!" and the response should be: "Indeed He is Risen!"
