GOD ’s there, listening for all who pray, for all who pray and mean it. (Psalm 145:18)
This reminds me of a time when my family were on holiday in the South of France with some French friends. We all attended their Church on a Sunday, and the pastor asked me to give an encouraging word. As I finished, a young family brought their young son (about 7) up for prayer. He was covered in a hard body cast from his neck to the top of his legs and had apparently broken his back during a skiing accident.
Feeling the pressure, I decided to pretend to be all holy and close my eyes. The Lord, however, interrupted my thoughts, and I was told to watch. I began to pray, and with every eye on me in the whole Church, I began to feel extremely uncomfortable. I decided to focus on the family group and not the 400+ strong congregation.
By now, the mother was sobbing uncontrollably. The father was staring at the ceiling, doing his best to hold it all together. The boy’s eyes were wide with horror, and he looked like I was about to cattle-prod him! I looked at the daughter, who was only about 3 years old. She just stared at me with such force in her little eyes that I swear I could hear her thoughts! “Who are you, and what are you doing to my brother?”
I became captivated by her stare when suddenly the boy began to slowly bounce under my hand on his head. The mother narrowed her laser beam eyes onto me as he began to bounce ever more rapidly – as if this was something I was doing! Likewise, the father gave me a disapproving look that I understood to mean, ‘be careful with my son!’ I still had one wide eye on the little girl when the boy suddenly stopped bouncing under my hand and shot backwards as if he’d been fired out of a cannon!
All of us stared wide-eyed in horror at his crumpled form among the chairs! Before anyone could react he slowly rolled over and began picking himself up on his own, and he started crying/ laughing, “Mamma, mamma!” He screamed for all to hear, “All the pain has gone, all the pain has gone!!”
I was about as much in shock as they were when I heard the Lord tell me to say to the little girl: “Tell her that I heard her prayer!”
